KEDARKANTHA WINTER TREK

5D/4N

Brief Description

Kedarkantha Peak, located in the highlands of the Tons River Valley, is a lovely ridge peak that is accessible most of the year, save during the monsoon season and during peak winters. The trip is surrounded by a variety of flora and wildlife as it passes through Govind National Park, making it even more attractive, adventurous, and satisfying.

The summit is 3810 meters (12,500 feet) above sea level, and reaching there is particularly gratifying since you have a 360-degree panorama of peaks in Uttarakhand such as the Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch I & II, Black Peak, and Ranglana, all of which are part of the Yamunotri and Gangotri ranges.

The Har Ki Dun valley, which stretches below, is visible. On the northwest, the Himachal Pradesh mountains, which extend into the Kinnaur ranges, can be seen, while on the west, the Rupin valley flows into Himachal Pradesh. Villages such as Purola and Mori may be seen to the east. All novices who enjoy the snow and high altitude are encouraged to participate in this journey!

Detail Itinerary

Day 1: From Dehradun to Sankri - 8 h drive

The road from Dehradun to Sankri passes through Mussoorie, Nowgaon, Purola, and Mori, among other cities and villages. We continue our journey inwards after gaining elevation in Mussoorie and are shortly joined by the river Yamuna a few kilometres ahead of Kempty Falls. The trip takes you through a deep pine forest, enveloping you in a pleasant yet strong pine aroma. You enter Mori after driving through a long stretch of pine trees. From here, you'll be accompanied by the Tons River, which is the Yamuna's largest tributary and a popular rafting destination. The scenic trip begins early in the morning in order to get at Sankri by sunset. The 190-kilometer journey takes about 8 to 9 hours to accomplish.

Day 2: From Sankri to Juda Ka Talab - 4 KM : 3-4 h

After breakfast, we leave Sankri early and begin our walk to Juda Ka Talab. The journey from Sankri to the base camp is exciting. The walk begins in the hamlet, traversing another community, Saud, before reaching the route that leads to Kedarkantha, with children on their way to school and local village women beginning their daily errands and chores. After a short distance, the route enters a pine forest and begins to rise steeply until it reaches a ridge. The route evens out and expands on the ridge. Because the light cannot penetrate the thicket of pine and maple trees, the stroll is kept cool by the density of the forest. Finally, you'll arrive to Juda Ka Talab, a tiny lake known for three floating landmasses. We arrive to the lake for the night and have supper beneath the glittering presence of billions of stars!

Day 3: From Juda Ka Talab to Kedarkantha Base Camp- 4 KM : 3-4 h

A route leads further into the thick pine trees after passing Juda Ka Talab. If you keep travelling, you'll eventually come to a meadow with shepherd's cottages. After another thousand feet of ascending, you'll arrive at the day's destination: Kedarkantha base camp. This section of the hike takes around 2-3 hours to complete. From Juda Ka Talab to the base camp, the path is breathtakingly gorgeous and fascinating. It's the ideal spot for photographers and wildlife lovers alike! Because of the absence of insulation, the base camp is cooler than the peak. The renowned peaks of Uttarakhand can be seen for miles from the base camp, making it an ideal location for camping.

Day 4: From Base Camp to Kedarkantha Summit and return to Hargaon- 12 KM

According to tradition, this mountain was meant to be the original Kedarnath temple, but Lord Shiva, who was hiding from the Pandavas as a cow, was disturbed while meditating by the locals. Due to the interruption, he relocated from this mountain to the current Kedarnath shrine. After spending some time on the peak, we trek back to base camp. After lunch, we travel to Hargaon (2 km trail). On the way to Sankri, there is a huge camping place called Hargaon. Before departing from this lovely location, an overnight stay is needed.

Day 5: From Hargaon to Sankri to Dehradun; 8 h drive

We're going to Sankri today. This day's 4 kilometre walk path takes around 2-3 hours to complete. You may spend the remainder of the day exploring Sankri, which is recognised as the centre of the Har Ki Dun valley, as well as neighbouring villages such as Gangad and Osla. Sankri is a classic “Pahari” village, where the inhabitants give unrivalled hospitality. It also serves as the final access point to the Govind Balabh Pant Wildlife Sanctuary. It's always a pleasure to return home. However, the journey will not be simple because we will be returning to Dehradun over the same enticing route. As we return to Dehradun, the terrain gradually transforms from pine trees to larger highways, ultimately revealing the busy city life.
